It was so dark outside that you could only see the lights on buildings and cars and trucks. You couldn't see the structures themselves, only the lights. From a distance, though, you could use pattern recognition to identify what you were seeing. Lights that went in rectangles up into the sky implied a skyscraper. Small groups of four or six red and white lights moving in lines implied a highway with cars and trucks. You could use your experience to guess a lot of things by just seeing the lights. Some things were odd, however. The tall bridges of the mixmaster were invisible, so the line of cars passing over it looked as though they were flying off into the heavens.
