A group of medical oncologists and surgeons met in Houston today to debate my Susan's treatment. They decided, if you can call it a decision, that there was no way to know whether it would be better to do the resection surgery to remove her esophagus and stomach or to wait and see if the cancer returns. Risks abound either way. They determined, in the end, that they should offer her the option.
She has decided that she wants to go ahead with the surgery. She will not feel she has done everything within her power to fight this cancer if she doesn't have the surgery. It's tentatively scheduled for December 11th, one month from now. Until then, her task is to eat and exercise, a tall order for someone who can't even get out of bed most days and who has lost more than thirty pounds in the last month.
This is, ultimately, her decision. I am conflicted about it, but I'll support her in whatever she decides.
Please continue to remember us in your thoughts.
Love.
