Is Steely Dan right about the generation gap? Is it true that we can't dance together? Is it true that we can't talk at all? Does she really not remember the queen of soul?
I have to admit that I have, at times, struggled to really understand the current group of teens. In my time as an adult, I should point out, there have been several batches of "current groups of teens". I'm not one to look at the next generation and feel like we're doomed any more than I'm one to look at the half of society that falls into some other political camp and think they must all be morons or bad people. I'm a believer in the intrinsic goodness of all people.
I'm getting distracted, as I always do. Back to the point. I can relate to teens like I can relate to any normal people at a surface level. I always want to relate at a very low level, however. I want to be able to see the world like they do. I want to have a real sense of their ousia. I want to understand how they feel and why.
Sometimes I can catch a glimpse, if I observe from a distance, but I couldn't offer a thesis as to the controlling themes of this generation of teens. The subtleties aren't that clear to me.
And what about you? Do you feel "in touch" or "out of touch"? Why?
Later. Love.
P.S. - Having just listened to the song Convoy by C.W. McCall, I'm considering changing my standard farewell to "We'll catch you on the flip flop. This here's The Rubber Duck on the side. We gone. Bye BYEEE."
